Abstract
Abstract
His work explores how, now a days, the theoretical assumptions of the Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) are challenged by the dynamics of the market. The failure of the core assumptions of the MPT to represent the market’s behavior has leveled lot of practical and theoretical criticism. The critiques fall to three main ideas: the efficiency of the market, the statistical tools use by the MPT and the effect of diversification in today’s market.
Despite new schools of thought, such as behavioral finance and market timers, and academics, such as Nassim Taleb and Mandelbrot; agree in the fact that the MPT main ideas are challenged in practice and the market cannot be explained by a bell shaped probability distribution. Diversification still is the “Free Lunch” in finance. It helps to conserve the value of portfolio against downturns and there are no betters models for decision taking yet which are not based in the same assumptions of the MPT.
