Colombia is an ultra-diverse country, in the sense that it boasts geographical advantages and a variety of both fauna and flora species, which would allow it to position itself as a powerhouse in sustainable tourism. However, systematic challenges arise in practice that prevent the full development of its economic, community, and technical potential. From this framework, the following question was formulated: What are some of the main challenges and positive impacts of implementing sustainable tourism on the economic and social development of rural communities in the Colombian Coffee Axis? To answer this question, the research: Identified the context and structure of sustainable tourism in Colombia from the perspective of its regulatory framework, public policies, and regulations; Diagnosed the economic and social opportunities generated by sustainable tourism in rural communities of the Coffee Axis in terms of employment, entrepreneurship, and local commerce; Determined the main challenges for the effective implementation of sustainable tourism in the Colombian coffee region. This research is of a mixed type, combining interviews with sustainable tourism experts, entrepreneurs, business owners, and institutional actors, with the application of a survey to over 200 potential tourists. Colombia does not have a legal system or regulatory framework that stimulates, protects, or perpetuates sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism is a platform for exposure and economic development for the region and its inhabitants, by exposing them to a series of knowledge, challenges, and relationships exclusive to this activity. The quality of sustainable tourism in a region lies in the quality of its institutions. One of the biggest challenges facing the successful implementation of sustainable tourism is the lack of inter-institutional articulation.
